JK Rowling's glamorous alter ego Poppy Montgomery transforms from blonde to redhead after wrapping biopic

With her glossy red mane, she looks almost unrecognisable as the actress who was recently spotted shooting a biopic about Harry Potter author JK Rowling.

With the magic of hair dye, Australian actress Poppy Montgomery, 38, transformed from blonde to flame-haired siren as she attended an event in New York.

And Rowling, who is a self-confessed fan of red hair, would probably quite admire the style.

Without A Trace star Poppy was pictured at the CBS Upfront event yesterday, where she was announced in a new drama, and looked stunning in a form fitting blue bandage dress which complemented her killer figure.

Last month Poppy finished filming Magic Beyond Words, an unauthorised biopic about the life of Rowling, who rose to worldwide fame as the brains behind the Potter novels.

Joanne has tried the red head look herself several years ago, although she is now more memorable as a bottle blonde.

In one interview, Rowling confessed: 'I love red hair. But my hair isn't naturally red.

'I'm actually not really sure what my real colour is. It's something undecided, very boring and very uninteresting.

Rowling has, unsurprisingly, declined to give her blessing to the movie being made about her, which will be screened on the Lifetime channel in the U.S. later this year.

Her publicist told Vancouver's Times Colonist newspaper recently: 'I can confirm that the biopic Magic Beyond Words: The JK Rowling Story is unofficial and not authorised. We cannot comment further.'

For the role Montgomery learnt to speak in Rowling's British accent and wore blue contact lenses.

When asked what she would do if she ever met Rowling, Montgomery told Access Hollywood: 'I'd turn into a puddle of water!'

Instead of Portugal and Edinburgh, where Rowling spent a lot of her pre-Potter publication life, filming started in the city of Victoria in the Canadian province of British Columbia, last week.

Speaking at the Bafta Film Awards earlier this year, director Paul Kaufman said: 'This is about a woman who decided to persevere, to keep on with her dream.

'She was on welfare and she really hit rock bottom.'

In March Montgomery was pictured in Vancouver, Canada, filming scenes that recreated Rowling's first ever public reading of the debut Harry Potter novel, The Philosopher's Stone in 1997.

The actress was snapped walking through the streets of Vancouver, which had been made to look like London in a floral dress and beige mac.

Sydney-born actress Montgomery is best known for playing FBI agent Samantha Spade in crime drama Without A Trace.

She first came to prominence though in 2001, playing Marilyn Monroe in a CBS mini-series Blonde.

Yesterday she was announced in a new CBS drama Unforgettable where she stars as an enigmatic former police detective with a rare condition that makes her memory almost flawless.

Former Nip/Tuck star Dylan Walsh plays her ex-boyfriend and partner in the show.

Prior to publication of the books, Rowling has spoken about her struggle to bring up her daughter Jessica as a single mother living on benefits.

She split from Jessica's father, Portuguese journalist Jorge Arantes after a year of marriage and moved to Scotland, where her sister lived.

Rowling is now married to Dr Neil Murray and they have two children together, David and Mackenzie.

Since the first book Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone was published in 1997, Rowling has gone on to sell over 400million copies worldwide.
