George Michael no longer making bid for early release from prison

Singer-songwriter George Michael is no longer making an appeal for an early release from prison.

Michael, 47, had hired lawyers to get him out of Pentonville just three days into his eight-week prison sentence for drug driving.

But they cancelled an application for him to be released on bail pending a full-scale appeal against the sentence, and he is now likely to serve half his sentence before he is freed.

The singer had been due to appear via videolink for a conference with his lawyers before a bail hearing at Blackfriars Crown Court, London.

A clerk for his barrister, Mukul Chawla QC, confirmed the hearing had been pencilled in the lawyer's diary.

"It was in the diary, but now there's nothing in his diary today," the Daily Star quoted the clerk as saying.

A court spokesman added: "It's been cancelled completely. There are no new dates for the hearing."

Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle is set to walk down the aisle with NFL footballer Jason Bell after he proposed to her in Los Angeles last week.

Asked by presenter Scott Mills during an appearance on British station Radio 1 if she was wearing an engagement ring, she said: "Yes that is an engagement ring. It happened last week."

"It happened in Los Angeles. He was really nice about it. He got down on two knees, not one knee because he had played football for a while so he was all banged up. It was different! It was really, really nice. He's probably dying now," she said.

"I just got back from London and he was in New York and he surprised me with a ring and stuff, while I was in my pyjamas! If I had known I would have had a blow-dry or at least had a manicure or something!" she added.

Kylie Minogue had heavenly childhood

Australian pop princess Kylie Minogue  feels grateful for her "heavenly" childhood because after signing up as an ambassador for a kids' charity she realised the hell some youngsters experience in their youth.

The " Spinning Around" hitmaker is a long-term spokeswoman for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) here and her work with the charity has made her aware of how blissful her formative years were in Melbourne, Australia, reports contact music.

"I have been one of their ambassadors - a very proud one - since 2003. The work they do is incredible. In comparison to some of the stories they deal with, I feel like I fell from heaven with the childhood I had," she said.

"I will give any help that I can to raise awareness - especially for the NSPCC helpline - that is just so important for people to know about," she added.
