Is Cameron Diaz set for a brush with Bollywood? It's believed that the Hollywood hottie might hobnob with B- Town stars, including Amitabh Bachchan at the IIFA awards gala scheduled to be held in June 2011 in Toronto.
Diaz is expected to be part of a Hollywood entourage being invited to participate.
The organisers say they have spoken to Diaz but remain noncommittal about confirming her participation. " It's too early to talk about the details. We won't divulge anything until the right time," says Sabbas Joseph, director of Wizcraft, organisers of the IIFA awards. Joseph also refuses to verify if Bachchan will be participating as the brand ambassador of the awards as he did till 2009.
Last year, the Bachchans gave the IIFA Awards, held at Colombo, a miss after certain Tamil groups demanded that all Indian filmstars should boycott the event because it was being hosted in Sri Lanka, where Tamils have been persecuted over the years.
Despite attempts, the Big B remained unavailable for comment.
Reports, however, are rife that since the event is being held in Toronto in 2011, several Hollywood stars will be invited and that Diaz has already confirmed participation.
Diaz apart, Rob Schneider, John Schneider and Tom Green are among the Hollywood celebrities expected to attend the event owing to their collaboration with an Indian film production company, True Cinema. Reports are rife that all these stars could be in India in January to announce their collaborative venture.
In fact, writer- director Sudipto Sen, who heads True Cinema, has stated that Diaz among others " is expected to be part of two annual Bollywood awards". It was also suggested that the actress will play the lead in a crossover romance with a top Bollywood actor - reportedly Hrithik Roshan.
Also, Hollywood star Russell Crowe is expected to play the lead a film, Amrit Kumbh , being produced in collaboration with True Cinema and a Hollywood film production house. Sen added that Crowe is expected to visit India later in 2011.
Another Hollywood actress, Drew Barrymore, might also be headed to Toronto to attend global award function.
Diaz has already struck a Bollywood connection, albeit in an indirect way. Karan Johar's upcoming production venture, Stand By Me , is believed to be inspired by her 2008 romantic comedy hit, What Happens In Vegas . Karan's film, being shot currently in Las Vegas, features Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the roles played by Ashton Kutcher and Diaz, respectively.
It remains to be seen if Diaz indeed joins the Bollywood glitterati at IIFA Toronto.
The initial years of IIFA saw Angelina Jolie, Kylie Minogue, Jean Claude Van Damme and Jackie Chan attend the gala. Peter Andre attended the 2009 IIFA awards.
